They stick to their posts, in the laboratory or testing room, day and night.
Against the backdrop of a dark night, Yili Jinhai Laboratory Building is dotted with rooms with lights on. “Engineer, the solution is leaking from the pump module of the instrument...” On the Eve of the Spring Festival, the video conversation between Zhao Lingzhi and the maintenance engineer was still on.

Proprietary formula from China to extend mother’s care
The unexpected malfunctioning of an essential testing instrument got in the way of her family reunion feast. Under the instruction of a maintenance engineer via video conference, she eventually found the malfunctioning parts and fixed the leaking problem after checking and checking. Relieved as she was when seeing the instrument back to normal, she started her work right away, running tests on milk powder samples and uploading testing results, to make up for the time lost and ensure the following procedures won’t be affected.
At ten pm, her phone rang. “When you come home, we will have the family reunion feast again,” said the other side of the phone. At that moment, the words were like a broom, sweeping all the tiredness off her shoulder.
Over the past decade or so, collecting product samples, running tests on the instrument, and uploading test reports are the main scenarios of her work. She works with instruments and runs product tests, sometimes up to a dozen or so, on a daily basis. Meanwhile, she is responsible for regular overhauls and risk checks of techniques and equipment involved in the whole production line, including small parts, such as connecting hoses and seals, to make sure the whole production line is risk-free.
This is daily work for Zhao Lingzhi and other Yili employees. What they do is not nail-biting, but it is their meticulous work, testing, and reporting, that has ensured the nutrition and health of tens of millions of babies.
In the eighth year of her work at Yili, Jinhai laboratory prepared to apply for the approval of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment, or CNAS. If the laboratory gain approval, it means that it meets national and international standards for management and testing.
Zhao knew full well how hard the first application was since there weren’t many precedents to follow and the examination was rigorous.
When that day finally came, judges added some items to the examination on the spot. Zhao and her colleagues worked the whole night to formulate a quality-control plan and a set of testing procedures. That night, the lights of the laboratory were never off, and instruments were running tests all the time with results on the screen being updated constantly. Finally, at 4 am, the team got a result with accuracy up to 100%, winning the green light from the CNAS judges.
Zhao recalled that her colleagues and she almost stayed at the lab 24/7 whenever there was an extensive verification. They would check again and again to ensure complete satisfaction with the safety of Yili products. Her father and friends also mentioned that “we trust Yili’s products. My daughter spends all her time at the lab to run the tests.”
